Sprinklers and fire doors do different jobs
Fire safety measures work together, but they are not automatically interchangeable.
A recent CROSS-UK report highlights a legacy issue in some residential care homes. Earlier editions of Approved Document B allowed bedroom door self-closing devices to be omitted in certain circumstances where sprinklers were installed. The guidance was amended in March 2025, removing that allowance and recognising suitable free-swing or hold-open devices linked to the fire alarm system.
The change raises an important question for existing buildings. If an arrangement was accepted under earlier guidance, can it simply be assumed to remain suitable today?
Not necessarily.
That does not mean every existing care home must be retrospectively altered to match the latest guidance. Approved Document B is guidance, not a programme of automatic upgrades whenever an edition changes. However, the fire risk assessment must still be suitable and sufficient for the building as it exists, the people who live there and the way evacuation is managed.
In a care home, those factors can be demanding. Residents may be asleep, have limited mobility, require staff assistance or be unable to respond reliably to an alarm. The protection of corridors and other circulation spaces is therefore critical. A closed fire door can restrict the early movement of smoke and hot gases from a bedroom. A sprinkler is intended to control or suppress fire development, but it does not perform precisely the same function and may not operate before smoke has escaped through an open doorway.
This is the danger in treating one fire precaution as a substitute for another without returning to the original design assumptions. The conclusion may have depended upon a particular fire scenario, staffing model, detection standard, evacuation strategy or resident profile. If those assumptions were never recorded, or have since changed, the claimed equivalence may no longer be dependable.
Traditional self-closers can themselves create difficulties for older or frail residents. The answer is not to ignore accessibility in pursuit of compartmentation. Suitable free-swing closers can allow a door to operate normally in everyday use while closing when the alarm activates. Hold-open devices may offer a similar balance in appropriate circulation locations. Selection, installation, interface testing and maintenance all remain essential.
The practical lesson reaches beyond care homes. Compensatory features should be treated as an interacting package, not as credits collected in a design calculation. Whenever one element is altered, removed or found unreliable, the effect on the whole strategy should be reviewed.

Compliance history is useful evidence, but it is not the end of the assessment. The better question is whether the combined precautions remain appropriate for the people relying upon them today.
