Automation Is Not Judgement
There is a subtle but important shift underway in professional practice. It is not about new standards or new materials. It is about how decisions are being made, and more importantly, who is making them.
Artificial intelligence is now embedded in many workflows across fire safety and wider professional services. It can summarise guidance, structure reports, and interrogate large volumes of information far more quickly than any individual. Used well, it is a powerful assistant.
But it is only an assistant.
The risk emerges when assistance becomes substitution.
The Academy of Experts has recently addressed this directly in its 2026 guidance on the use of artificial intelligence by expert witnesses. The central message is unambiguous. AI may support the process, but it must not replace human judgement, and accountability always remains with the expert.
That position should resonate far beyond the courtroom.
Fire engineering has long grappled with adjacent issues. We have seen the consequences of overextended desktop studies, the misapplication of test evidence, and the quiet drift from system understanding to product assumption. In each case, the common failure is not technical. It is a failure of judgement.
AI introduces a new pathway to the same outcome.
Outputs can appear coherent, structured and convincing. That is precisely the problem. If they are accepted without challenge, the professional role is reduced to endorsement rather than evaluation. At that point, the risk has not been managed. It has simply been displaced.
From a liability perspective, this is not subtle. Responsibility does not sit with the tool. It sits with the person who relies upon it. Courts, insurers and professional bodies are already aligning around that principle. AI does not dilute duty. It reinforces it.
The Academy’s guidance is particularly instructive because it frames AI use within the existing duties of independence, transparency and rigour. It emphasises that experts must understand how AI has been used, verify its outputs, and ensure that their opinions remain their own.
That is a useful lens for fire safety practice more broadly.
If an AI tool is used to support a fire strategy, the assumptions must still be interrogated. If it assists in drafting a fire risk assessment, the conclusions must still be owned. If it highlights omissions, those omissions must still be understood in context. The process may be accelerated, but the intellectual responsibility is unchanged.
There is also a discipline point. AI is at its most persuasive when it is wrong in a plausible way. That demands a more active, not less active, form of review. The competent person is no longer just checking compliance. They are validating the reasoning itself.
None of this is an argument against adoption. Quite the opposite. Innovation is both inevitable and, properly managed, beneficial. Efficiency gains are real. Consistency can improve. But only within a framework that is explicit about control, review and accountability.
The line is simple, even if it is easy to cross.
Use AI to support your thinking. Do not use it to replace it.
Because the moment professional judgement is outsourced, even implicitly, the role of the engineer changes. And not in a way that is defensible when it matters.
